Browser Extension Tips

A collection of helpful tips and troubleshooting notes for getting the most out of the Applyology browser extension.

Best practices

Fill out your profile as completely as possible

The extension drafts every answer from your profile. The more you fill in — work history, education, skills, links, work authorization, EEO — the more fields the extension can autofill, and the higher the confidence on each suggestion. A thin profile means a lot of empty cards on every application.

Whenever you find yourself editing the same answer across multiple applications, that's a hint to add the underlying info to your profile so future drafts pick it up automatically.

Fill required fields in the extension, not on the page

When the extension can't draft a required field, it shows the card with a red border. Type your answer into the card in the extension panel instead of directly into the form on the page. Edits made in the extension are saved on the application — so if you ever need to recapture or autofill again, your answer is preserved. Edits typed straight into the page aren't captured back.

The same applies to changing a drafted answer: edit it in the extension card, then it autofills the page with the updated value.

Review every answer before submitting

Applyology never submits an application for you. Walk through each card, confirm the values look right, and handle any CAPTCHAs, attachments, or verification steps yourself. The extension assists with data entry — you stay in control of what gets sent.

Accessibility

The extension is built to make applying easier for everyone, including candidates who use assistive technology or have a hard time with long, repetitive forms.

  • Reduces repetitive typing — your profile fills the same fields across every application, so you're not retyping name, address, work history, or links on every site.
  • Show on page highlights the matching field with a focused overlay, helping you find where an answer goes without scanning a long form visually.
  • Keyboard accessible — every card action (Show on page, Copy, Enhance, Save) is reachable by tab and activatable by Enter or Space.
  • Screen-reader announcements — capture, drafting, and autofill phases are announced via aria-live regions, so progress is audible, not just visible.
  • Visible status — successfully filled cards get a green "✓ Success" pill; required fields that need your attention get a red border. The same information is exposed to assistive tech via labels and live regions.

If you encounter an accessibility issue, submit feedback so we can fix it.

Show on page

Each captured question card in the Apply tab has a Show on page button. Click it to highlight the matching field on the application page — useful when:

  • A field has scrolled off-screen and you want to jump to it.
  • You're not sure which on-page input corresponds to a card in the extension.
  • You want to confirm the answer is going where you expect before submitting.

If the field has moved or been re-rendered since capture, you'll see a brief message like "Couldn't find this field on the page — it may have moved." Recapturing the page (close and re-open the application via Start application) usually fixes that.

Copy

Each card also has a Copy button that copies the suggested or edited answer to your clipboard. Useful when:

  • A field isn't autofilling and you want to paste it manually.
  • The form uses a custom/embedded input the extension can't reach.
  • You're filling out a PDF or a downloadable application.

You can copy any value from the extension at any time — the extension is a profile reference even when it isn't actively driving the page.

"Couldn't reach the application page — reload the tab and try Autofill again"

If you see this error during capture or autofill, the extension's content script lost contact with the page. This can happen after a navigation or a long idle period. Refresh the tab in your browser, then try Autofill (or Start application) again. The error clears automatically.

"Click Apply on this posting first"

On a Lever or Greenhouse job posting, Start application only works once you're on the actual application form, not the job description page.

  • Lever: click the Apply for this job button — the URL changes to include /apply.
  • Greenhouse: the form is embedded on the same page. Scroll down to the form before clicking Start application.

"Pick a job from the Employers tab to start applying"

The pilot only supports Lever and Greenhouse for capture and autofill. If you're on a different site, Save Job and Start application will be disabled. Open the Employers tab to pick a job from a supported employer, or save the role for later from the dashboard.

Domain mismatch

If you start an application on one site and then switch tabs to a different domain, the extension shows "This page is on X, but this application is on Y. Switch tabs to continue." The active application stays attached to the tab where you started it — switch back to that tab to keep working on it.

Continue an existing application

Open a saved or in-progress application from the Apply tab's Saved or In Progress segment to jump back to where you left off. The extension reopens the application URL in the tab and reattaches automatically.

If the application's URL is already open in another tab, you'll be switched to that tab instead of opening a duplicate.

Enhance an answer

If a drafted answer needs polish, click Enhance on the card to have Applyology rewrite it in your voice. You can keep the result, edit it further, or revert.

On this page indicator

When you reopen the extension on a URL that matches a saved job or in-progress application, the matching card gets an animated On this page badge. It's a quick visual confirmation that you're back in the right place.

When the extension is silent

If the extension popup doesn't load or the indicator at the bottom of the dashboard says No browser extension available:

  • Make sure the extension is pinned to your toolbar (see Install the Browser Extension).
  • Try clicking the icon to open the popup — some browsers gate content scripts behind an explicit user click.
  • If you've recently signed out or cleared storage, sign in again from the popup.
  • Still stuck? Reload the page, then reopen the extension.
